They drove to the OB Diner, and Lyria was glad it was close. It was one thing to see automobiles driving by, it was quite another to be in one. She could swim fast, probably faster than Drew was driving, but she was petrified for the entire trip although she tried not to let it show.

“Hey, Drew! Didn’t expect to see you in here tonight,” a woman called as they walked in. “How’d you end up managing.”

“Hi, Tina. Thanks for being there with the desserts tonight. That was crazy beyond words.”

“I hear you. We know what it’s like to get in the weeds around here. Grab a booth or a table and I’ll bring you some menus. Want decaf?”

“Sounds good, thanks.”

He walked Lyria over to a booth with ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, sugar and packages of jelly already on the table along with paper mats at each seat. “In the weeds?” she asked.

“It’s an expression meaning completely overwhelmed and behind in filling orders and helping customers. It’s the situation we found ourselves in tonight.”

Tina came over with two mugs of coffee and little cups of creamer. She placed the menus in front of them and said, “And we were there to bail you out with a few extra desserts.”

“That you were. What would we have done without your rice pudding and chocolate cream pie?”

“I shudder to think, darling.”

“Anything we can do to help in the future, just ask.”

She gave him a wink and walked off to help a group of young adult males who looked to have enough food on the table to feed twice as many people.

“There’s nothing fancy about this place,” Drew said, “but the food is great and served in abundance.”

They opened up their menus and looked through. Lyria couldn’t believe the number of pages of items they had. The menu at The Siren wasn’t in half this big. “I don’t know where to start.”

“Do you trust me?”

That was a loaded question, but since she knew what he meant, she said yes. When Tina came back he said, “Two orders of hash and eggs over easy and a double stack of banana pancakes.” Tina didn’t even bother to write down what he said. Lyria was impressed. Having spent the night waiting tables, she didn’t think she could do that. “I hope you’re hungry,” Drew said.

“Not surprisingly, I am,” she said.

As they waited for their order Lyria took in the décor. The place was a good size but it wasn’t busy at the moment. Given the size of the menu, however, she could imagine that during regular meal times it was a madhouse. In addition to the tables in the center and the booths on the side, there was a long counter, not unlike the bar back at the club. Two men were sitting there arguing over something called the Mets. She didn’t know what or who they were but it was clearly very important. At the end of the counter she could see a refrigerated case filled with desserts.
